Where can I find old newspapers for research?

Answer

A good place to start is the library's Newspapers page. You can get there using the blue "Search by Subject" tab on the library's homepage. You will find links to Chicago Tribune and New York Times dating back to the mid 1800s. You will also find links to newspaper resources from Library of Congress and a Google newspaper archive.
